Network kusWo – communal & self-administrated living

Democratisation, participation and long-term security in municipal housing

After a long phase of privatisation, the state-owned housing stock in Berlin is being expanded again. In order to protect this public stock from privatisation in the long term and to maintain it permanently as part of a socially just housing supply, the kusWo network was founded to demand the expansion of tenants-participation.

The communal & self-administrated living network kusWo was established in Berlin in 2017. Tenants of existing or future (re-)municipalised houses, self-governing projects in buildings owned by state-owned housing companies and initiatives from new municipal housing projects have joined forces in kusWo. Their common demand is the democratisation of municipal housing supply. In various areas and models: from administration and housing occupancy to planning processes they want to implement or maintain tenant participation in order to protect the communal social housing stock for the future. kusWo – communal & self-administrated living invites for exchange and discussion. It presents ideas and approaches, as well as individual houses and their participation models and offers space for common discussion and questions. The event will be held in German language.

kommunal & selbstverwaltet Wohnen (kusWo-Netzwerk) are tenants in (re-) municipalised houses and settlements; tenants in houses and settlements that are still waiting for (re-) municipalisation; residents of formerly occupied houses who have shown for decades how self-government structures are possible in the state-owned housing companies as well as urban activists who are committed to the introduction of self-governing elements in new municipal housing projects. The network aims to initiate a discussion throughout the city about the integration of participation and self-administration in state-owned housing companies and to avert the concretely threatened housing situation in the participating buildings.
